Since our first week of school was a full five days, I really focused on building community and moving the kids into a daily routine. Although our class uses technology for a variety of learning, we did not use this as we normally will throughout the year.
So . . . what did we do with technology?
Students used their chrome books daily for a variety of lessons. The first learning curve was to login and change passwords. The login practice occurred twice a day for four days that first week. Practice makes perfect!
A “Getting to Know Me” form was completed and submitted. I used this to learn more about each student’s strengths and weaknesses – a student perspective.
An assignment was completed with their “Aviation” lesson and submitted. Check out the aviation post.
Of course, students learned how to post in the stream area. We talked about how to post, what to post, and why it is important to following the learning guidelines, so we are successful and learning in the Google Classroom.
Students also began using the online learning system.
I read a few picture books to the class as part of our learning; therefore, I was able to teach the students how to login to the AR (Accelerated Reader) program, so a comprehension quiz could be taken for each book read. My school uses this program to motivate students to read and earn prizes for achieving AR point levels.
Students joined our Google Classroom and completed several lessons.
As you can see, even though it was our first week of school, the students were engaged in building community, working with peers, getting to know each other, engaging in critical thinking, solving problems, and learning content.
