Service Learning in Our Community

One learning area that is important for teachers to engage students in is service learning. What is service learning? Service learning is a way for students to do something that betters their community AND engages students in academic learning.  It takes the service and educational pieces and puts them together into one project. I try to include a “service learning” component at least three times a year that coincide with the curriculum.  My goal is to have the students come up with ideas, but it takes time to get them thinking “big” to see projects in the community.

How to teach character

One of my favorite back to school lessons is “A Caring Being”.   This is a great social emotional lesson that I implement the first week of school.  This lesson builds upon the Learning Guidelines Lesson. Now that students have developed and agreed upon the class learning guidelines (I make them sign an agreement – an anchor chart – that we also post in the classroom), it is time for us to further cement the kind of people we want in our classroom.

High Flying STEM!

Well . . . after spending 25 years teaching in a traditional framework (last post), now I feel like I can finally TEACH!  The handcuffs are off, and I am free to inspire, motivate, and challenge my students to be the best learner he/she can be!  This in turn, challenges me to be the best teacher that I can be!!  Sooo exciting!

 

This past school year (2017 – 2018), I had the opportunity to teach in a blended technology and project based classroom.  I collaborated with three other teachers who were also piloting this program for our district.  The school year started out a little rough, since the online learning programs were not ready to go.  However, I knew what I needed to do to build my classroom community for a successful year.

My Beginning Journey!

Time for a quick confession:  I have been struggling with a challenge . . .  a huge challenge.  For years I have researched instruction, curriculum, and assessment in every subject area of the PK-8 curriculum.  Now, after 26 years in the classroom, as a practitioner, I am still not satisfied with my instruction.  How can this be?  Shouldn’t my job be clockwork?  Shouldn’t I have this “teaching” thing down to a “T“?  Ugh!!  I struggle!!

Hello Friends!!

 

I am excited to have this opportunity to share my journey with you!!  I hope to help you along your journey to personalizing education in a digital world or simply using technology to support learning for your students.  My doctorate dissertation focused on this exact area, so I feel like I have a basic foundation of knowledge about implementing technology to support instruction.  However, the technological world is constantly changing, which means I am constantly learning new things.

 

Since 2010, I have been teaching intermediate elementary education using a “flipped” classroom model IN my classroom, since many of my students did not have access to internet OR a device.  This method was proving successful, as I was able to meet the needs of more learners when introducing and reviewing content.  Student achievement scores were increasing and the achievement gap was closing.
